Fly a Puerto Rican Animal Home with You

rescue a puerto rico animal fly home with you Pud our LA rescue & Dulce our PR rescue

If you decide to take a Puerto Rican animal home with you - on the same flight you will be traveling on - take a look at what you may need.  If your dog is a 'service' or 'therapy' dog see the bottom of this page.  Either way,  make sure you call your airlines and ask for the animal specific department as many times general agents don't know the real deal on checking or carring-in-the-cabin animals.  If you'd like to rescue an animal from Puerto Rico you don't have to be flying yourself, see our Rescue a Puerto Rico Animal using Continental Airlines page.

  • A professional animal-specific crate - that the animal can fit 'comfortably in' and turn around in - 3in from their ears to the crate wall (from Mayaquez Walmart medium costs ~$50 XL ~$120)
  • Absorbent flooring in that crate, i.e., newspaper
  • Drip despensed water bottle
  • Dry food in a clear baggie tied to the top of the crate
  • Tie wraps in the crate bolt holes is a good idea to make the crate more secure
  • A health certificate from a local Puerto Rican Vet
  • There are varying theries on sedating your animal.  But a healthy animal should be better suited to deal with the stress of traveling NOT sedated.  Plus, some of the PR airports require you take the animal out of the crate being checking the animal onto the flight.  You don't want the animal asleep for that.

Service and Therapy Dogs

Search the internet for more specific information - but in general, service and therapy dogs are allowed free in the cabin with you.  Service dogs only require you inform your airlines they will be traveling with you, after you book your ticked but before you fly, is a good time to tell them.   Therapy dogs require the same airlines communication - in addition they require a note from your therapist explaining that the dog is your therapy dog.
